Dünyanın en derin gölü

Dünyanın en derin gölü olarak bilinen Baykal Gölü, dünyanın sekizinci büyük gölüdür. Yüzölçümü yaklaşık 31.722 km²’dir (adalar hariç). Ölçülebilmiş derinliği 1640 metre olup kimi kaynaklar 1740 metreyi telaffuz eder (Van gölü 457m, Hazar 946m, tek rakibi Tanganika 1435m). Ortalama derinliği 750 metre civarındadır.

Uzunluğu 636 km, en geniş yeri 79.5 km’dir (Onguren ve Ust-Barguzin köyleri arasında). Gölün tabanı deniz seviyesinin yaklaşık 1285 m altındadır.
